Next weekend The Flaming Feathers, a West country based dance troupe, will be at Chapel Arts, Bath in all their high kicking, knicker flashing glory! Jo Taylor caught up with manager and lead dancer Claire Phipps to find out more about them.
1. Exactly who are The Flaming Feathers and what do you do?
We are a professional vintage dance troupe covering burlesque, showgirl work, and dance styles from the much loved but bygone eras. We perform dances from the 1920s through to the 1960s including charleston, swing, jive and Go Go dancing. We work throughout the UK performing at cabaret shows, corporate events, parties and for charity. We’ve even danced on a truck on a farm with a rather quizzical cow and a sheep watching our can-can! We also hostess and are available for meet and greet and modelling assignments.

2. How did the troupe come about?
I’ve mostly danced as part of a group , whether that be tap, jazz or a hip hop crew, so after falling in love with burlesque and cabaret, I decided that dancing with a troupe would be much more fun than dancing solo. Before we had even rehearsed or formed, we accepted our first job in March 2011 which saw us take to the stage for the first time! We started off as a family of 4 and 10 months on have now expanded into a strong group of 10 girls. Everyone has come from a different background and we all have dance experience in every style imaginable! Our youngest feather is 21, and our oldest is 35 (although you would never believe it!)

3. Who do you look to for inspiration?
We tend to get most of our inspiration from the music, I study it a lot before I choreograph something. It has to be the right song choice or it won’t work. I dont tend to take inspiration from other similar dance groups or dancers, as I like to be original, and lead the way, rather than follow. Ive never been a sheep and always like to be unique.

4. What can audiences expect when they come to see The Flaming Feathers?
We are very diverse in what we do, and that’s what seperates us from similar troupes. so it depends what we have been booked to do! We bring character, glamour, charm and humour to every performance. We always give 110% in whatever we do, that’s the only way to be. Our passion for our dance and what we do always shows in our faces. Audiences can expect to fall in love with the old dances that we do, and should be tempted to try a class themselves!

5. What are your plans for the future of The Flaming Feathers?
Our plan is to dominate the world (no joke). We aim to be the top UK troupe and are hoping to get a TV/commercial break this year. We are currently in talks with the BBC so fingers crossed! We are looking to get sponsorship to help with our costuming costs, and think we could offer our potential sponsor a lot in return. If you are interested in being our sponsor please do get in touch.
